Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Malawi

Location: Msuli et al

Total Budget: $24,500

Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Maternal and child health

While visiting the village of Msuli in the Nhkatabay disctrict of Malawi, I saw the villagers drawing water from an open shallow well. The water is subject to contamination, and this well serves about 75 households. There are many children in the village who are vulnerable to water borne diseases. They need a water well that can provide safe, clean water. There are many villages in the same situation. I have identified a total of seven villages that have the same need. I propose drilling one well, and installing the pump, in each of the seven villages. This could impact 2500 people or more. The villages have schools and churches under the Anglican Diocese of Northern Malawi, under Bishop Fanuel Mangangani. The funds will be overseen by the Bishop and monitored by his staff, with the host Rotary Club of Mzuzu, Malawi. The Rotary Club of Burkburnett will help with fundraising in the club, and at other clubs in the district. I hope to have a total of five Rotarians from Burkburnett helping me raise funds from the other clubs.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
