Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: Philippines

Location: Manila

Total Budget: $60,200

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

The public school system in the Philippines is currently unable to provide adequate textbooks for the elementary and secondary levels and they could no longer supply any textbooks for the preschool pupils. The preschool is called Day Care Centers and are mostly operated by the Department of Social Welfare & Development under the supervision of the local government. The condition of these Day Care Centers usually do not have enough textbooks and other instructional materials.

Currently the preschool classes or Day Care Centers usually receives some budget from the local government to purchase the textbooks but they are just a fraction of the actual needs of the pupils. The proposed project is to develop and produce textbooks that will be distributed to these schools to augment their need of textbooks. We will also have a one day training seminar for the teachers to familiarize them on the features of the books and how to adopt to their teaching methods.

The project proposal is to develop and produce a textbook in accordance with the guidelines of the Department of Education for Preschool and is best suited to the pupils of the community identified. The books will be donated to the centers for use on loan to the pupils. There will be a teacher training-seminar to ensure that they are familiar on the features of the books and how to adopt to their teaching methods. The trained teachers must also train their teacher successor should the situation warrants.

We will seek also the assistance of the different Rotary Clubs in the district in screening and identifying the Day Care Centers in their area and as well as in the promotion and information dissemination in the community about the project. They will also be involve in the distribution of the textbooks and will serve as the feedback mechanism to assess the effectiveness of the project.

First phase is the textbook development and production, including its Teachers Guide and Manual.

Second phase is the training seminar of the teachers.

Final phase is the distribution and use of the textbooks.

The textbook development and production will be take approximately 6 months. The teachers training seminar of different schools will take about 1 month and distribution will be done thereafter.
