Project Overview

Te11 us a 1itt1e about your project. What are the main objectives of the project, and who wi11 benefit from it?

Kharpud and Khopewadi are very poor villages located in a remote rural area of Pune District. They are situated high up on the hills and due the geological strata of the region, they do not have any good sources of Ground water. Though there is good rainfall in the area (850 mm approx.) there is no water available for agriculture for most months in the year. The 4 to 6 summer months are especially bad and the residents have to walk 3 to 5 kilometers to meet their daily needs of drinking water.

The majority of the popu1ation in the vi11ages belongs to Mahadev koli tribes .These are bonafide tribals who are illiterate and lack the knowledge and expertise in farming. They were previously living in the hills and surviving from selling the produce that they could get from the forest like firewood, medicinal plants, birds and animals .They were resettled in the current location, as a part of developmental work of dams undertaken by the Government in their original habitat.

The land available to them for farming is also not very fertile. The crops grown by them are rice and local cereals like nag1i and wari . They are able to harvest only one crop, and that too of very low yield. Even though the rainfa11 is more in these areas, the vi11ages are surrounded by high s1opes making it difficu1t for the water to perco1ate. Most of the water is 1ost as runoff with very 1ess perco1ation. They are unable to grow a second crop due to unavai1abi1ity of water. There is a need to address these prob1ems of the peop1e so that we can increase their income and 1ive1ihood.

The Main objectives of the Project are

1) To meet the needs of both villages for water for Drinking, Personal use and agricultural purposes throughout the year

2) To provide the inputs and training for improving the agricultural output and incomes of the Villages.

3) To augment the income of the villages by training them in Goat rearing

4) Horticulture

5) Solar energy for home and community needs.

The beneficiaries of the Project will be the entire Population of both villages, 605 in Kharpur and 538 in Khopewadi
