Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Garashi

Total Budget: $35,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Following the very successful installation of a half kilometer water pipeline to the village of Zhongwani, near Garashi, Kilifi, Kenya which had suffered very badly in the 2018 floods. In the first month of the new pipeline operating the mothers in the village already could see a decrease in the number of diarrhoea illnesses of their children. This has ment an increase in the amount of time the children are spending at school. So the Rotary Club of Kilifi wish to follow this work up by connecting three more villages to the boreholes managed by our Partner Islamic Relief. These boreholes have a very large capacity, which is not being used to the full and are solar powered. So we envisage some more longer pipelines connecting villages to the existing system. The trench digging will be done by the villagers, saving labour costs and to ensure sustainability the water will be manged by a local womans' committee and a small charge made to each family.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
