The funds from this grant will be used to procure much needed medical equipment, training, and supplies for the Regional Center of Children Oncology and Hematology in Cherkasy, Ukraine, to replace outdated and failing equipment which may not otherwise be repaired or replaced. The equipment is need to provide precise administration of aggressive chemotherapy drugs to children suffering from cancer and cancer related diseases. This grant will also provide for the training of medical personal at the Center in the proper operation and maintenance of the medical equipment purchased, and the purchase of supplies required to allow for operation and maintenance of the medical equipment for at least five years. As such, this grant will provide for the proper treatment for approximately 1,250 children suffering from cancer and cancer related diseases over the next five years.The Center will continue to maintain the equipment for its usable life of about 10 years under its existing service contracts.
Dr. Olha Paliychuk, M.D., Ph.D, is the member of the Rotary Club of Cherkasy, she is a practicing oncologist, an expert of the Onco Gynecology Association of Ukraine, has been working at the Cherkasy Regional Oncologic Dispensary for more than 20 years, and has been a consultant for the Regional Children Oncology and Hematology Center for many years.
On behalf of the Rotary Club of Cherkasy, Dr. Paliychuk will work closely with Dr. Oksana Gluhareva, Head of the Regional Center of Children Oncology and Hematology and Chief Hematologist of Childhood in the Cherkasy Region, in overseeing the installation of the medical equipment purchased through this grant, as well as participate in the training of personnel in the proper operation and maintenance of the equipment, along with other members of the Rotary Club of Cherkasy.
Because of Dr. Paliychuk's familiarity with the Center and the challenges it faces, her Rotary Club, the Rotary Club of Cherkasy is the host Club and regularly participates in volunteer and sponsorship projects designed for children suffering from malignant tumors and blood cancer at the Center. Members of the host Club will continue to volunteer support to the Center as needed in implementing this project and visiting with the children who are there receiving treatment.
Host Club members will also work with Rotarians from other Clubs and Districts, including International Rotarians, to develop educational brochures for distribution in the local language regarding the warning signs of childhood cancer, the benefits of early detection, and the treatment options available for the treatment of childhood cancer and cancer related diseases at the Regional Children's Oncology and Hematology Center as a result of the efforts of Rotarians both locally and around the world.
International Rotarians provided assistance in preparing this grant application, provided partial funding, and solicited other Rotary Clubs in District 6990, and elsewhere, to obtain commitments for the additional funding needed for implementation of this project for purchasing medical equipment and supplies for the Regional Children's Oncology and Hematology Center, in Cherkasy, Ukraine.
International Rotarians will assist in developing educational brochures for distribution in the local language regarding the warning signs of childhood cancer, the benefits of early detection, and the treatment options available for the treatment of childhood cancer and cancer related diseases at the Regional Children's Oncology and Hematology Center as a result of the efforts of Rotarians both locally and around the world.
International Rotarians will assist the Host Rotarians with the transfer of funds to the suppliers of equipment and supplies, as well as with record keeping and reporting on this project to Rotary International.
