Project Title: PROVIDING NEEDED MEDICAL EQUIPMENT

TO HOSPITALS IN THE REGION OF NGOZI, BURUNDI

Building on previous curriculum reforms, website dissemination and professional development through Global Grants in collaboration with the University of Ngozi (#GG1529434, #GG1755935), Rotary Clubs in Fort Collins, Colorado and Ngozi Burundi will partner with Project C.U.R.E. to use best practices in medical and health sciences to integrate donated medical equipment into area hospitals.

"Amahoro" is the Kirundi word for peace. Founded in 1999 with a commitment to sustainable peace and development, the University of Ngozi (UNG) is uniquely situated to be a laboratory for supporting the "Triple Bottom Line" of sustainability by improving the integrated health of society, the environment and the economy. With active partners in the Ngozi Rotary Club and their commitment to "service in action," donated medical equipment will fill a vital need for this impoverished nation emerging from colonization and civil war.

We recognize that medical, health, societal and economic development will suffer if violence continues and that peace will be a casualty if communities remain mired in poverty. Although recent conflicts in the capital city currently threaten the last sixteen years of stability, conditions in the region of Ngozi have remained peaceful for many years and that is one of the principle reasons why we are working there. Building on the impact of previous Global Grants that focused on infusing sustainable peace studies throughout the curriculum and across the various levels of schooling, the Amahoro Project is primed to lead the way into a better future.

PROJECT C.U.R.E. is a non-profit organization based in Denver whose mission is to "identify, solicit, collect, sort and deliver medical supplies and services according to the imperative needs of the world." On average it delivers two semi-truck trailer-sized containers of medical relief every week. By volume, we are currently the world's largest distributor of donated medical supplies and equipment to developing nations. Its "target demographics include hospitals, clinics and medical professionals and the patients under their care." Since 1987, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has "delivered medical relief to hospitals and clinics in more than 120 countries."

An integrated and sustainable plan

Those committed to this project know that sustainable development must be wed with restorative educational innovations to prepare young people to heal and foster civil society as basic infrastructure needs are addressed. The University of Ngozi is being established as a viable center for research and development in sustainable peace and development.

With this grant, those at the University is helping Burundi forge (1) a recovery and rebirth of spirit, (2) reconcile wounds, differences, rivalries, prejudices, and hatreds, (3) resolve to understand the truth of the past, fix the present, and prepare for a better future; and (4) reinforce the resilience needed to rebuild an impoverished, post-colonial nation.

The population of Burundi is approximately 9,824,000. Neighboring countries and their populations include the following: Rwanda (11,324,000); Tanzania (51,046,000); Kenya (45,533,000); Democratic Republic of Congo (77,267,000); Uganda (37,102,000).
