Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Amazonas

Total Budget: $31,420

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

This project will help 200 children between 6 and 12 years old to learn how to read and write. These children are located in a indígena village called "Yanomami Ayari" in the country side of Santa Isabel do Rio Negro city, which is 846 km far from Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, in the middle of Rain Forest. The village is accessed only by river. The indígena village does not have power, no lights, no refrigerator, no tv. During the day the children goes to school and help they families in hunting, fishing or planting. At night they cannot study or do their homework because they don't have light at their houses. So the solution is to provide them with solar energy (Photovoltaic cells system). The solar energy kit will provide each family with at least 4 lamps, that will enable the children to do their homework and study at night. This solution is the cheapest one, no harm to environmental, free recharge supply energy, low or none maintenance cost and mainly won't change native culture.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
