Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Johannesburg South Africa

Total Budget: $30,000

Areas of Focus: Maternal and child health, Basic education and literacy

The purpose of the grant is to provide quality specialized education to 20 South African Children in Johannesburg South Africa. According to UNICEF the number of orphans and vulnerable children throughout Eastern and Southern Africa is growing. In large part, this is due to the death of parents from HIV and AIDS. As the number of orphans and vulnerable children grows, their communities become less and less capable of addressing all their basic needs, including their ability to go to school. That being said, the need to give these children an education becomes a priority if the cycle of tragedy and poverty in their lives is to be diminished. Oasis Haven is committed to providing orphaned and vulnerable with an environment suitable for learning. We believe that just sending children to any school is not good enough as some children have difficulties in learning which require a different approach to how they are taught.

Oasis Haven currently has children in 4 different schools and three children who are home schooled. The schools which the children attend are as follows:

• Steps Academy (private - Cambridge system)

• The Kings School (private - Independent Examination Board)

• Robinhills Primary (Government School)

• Blairgowrie Primary School. (Government School)

These schools are committed to ensuring that the children in our care attain an education but also that they develop psychologically to become confident and qualified members of society when they grow up. In each child's case, the child's educational needs are put first but that comes with a price as private schooling is more expensive than government schooling. Government schools are not an option because space in government schools is limited due to a high number of people seeking to send their children to affordable schools. Classes often have 40 to 50 children in them making it an inappropriate learning environment especially if the child has learning challenges.

The funds would be received and receipted by Oasis Haven, US, which is located in the Rancho Bernardo/Poway area. They would then be wired directly to Oasis Haven, South Africa, as a designated donation toward our Special Education Program. The money would be paid directly to the schools to cover the annual education costs

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
