Areas of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment, Water, sanitation and hygiene, Basic education and literacy
This Phase II WASH grant for the islanders of Saint Helene will get safe water to every home, school, and church on the island. Two 25,000 gallon storage tanks will be built. Over 10 miles of trenches will be dug by the islanders for the piping to each home. Approximately 220 concrete home storage units will be built according to Honduran standards. Families will be charged a monthly fee to fund the operation and maintenance of the system. Another key element ensuring the sustainability of this project is building the skills of the islanders to enable them to operate, and maintain the new distribution system for years to come. Our Honduran trainer has already begun a 22 module education system developed by CARE Honduras. A Water Board has been elected and officially recognized by the municipality. They have started training in their official responsibilities according to Honduran water law. Skills in plumbing, running meetings, bookkeeping, collecting fees, transparency, watershed protection, and even warehousing to protect purchased materials. Community meetings have been held to explain rights and responsibility of homeowners regarding water. Teachers, students and parents have begun to learn basics in hygiene and sanitation.
Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
