Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: D. 4651

Total Budget: $32,600

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

The "Associação Beneficente Pássaros de Luz" (Benevolent Association Birds of Light) is a civil, non-profit entity, organized and managed by a group of parents of children with cerebral palsy and professionals involved with this cause. The people responsible for this entity believe that Conductive Education is an educational system that meets the expectations of better quality of life for paralyzed people, helping them to acquire functional and social learning which will give them a more independent life, as much as possible. The main goal is to install and develop a service called Conductive Education, dedicated to take care of patients with cerebral palsy and related amendments. The Conductive Education is an educational system that provides care to people with motor disorders of all ages. In Brazil, the experiences in Conductive Education are restricted to Itajai, Florianopolis and São Paulo. Although there is no exact data on the number of people with cerebral palsy in Itajai, we can say that only in APAE (Association of Parents and Friends of Exceptional Children) of Itajai, there are 40 students with this disability and in our municipal schools, attending the classes, there are 30 other students with the same problem, without, however, receiving the necessary attention. The Conductive Education was known by some members of the Association Birds of Light through "Connes Institution / "Desarrollando la Educación Conductiva en México " / Developing Conductive Education in Mexico, in 2005, when a theoretical and practical course was attended by 5 Brazilian professionals and two children with cerebral palsy, also from Brazil. In a second action it was held in Itajai-SC, a two month course in 2006, taught by a Mexican instructor, Irving Avila Ortiz, with the participation of twenty Brazilian professionals. This course was sponsored by the Guga Kuerten Institute and APAE of Itajai.
