Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Uganda

Location: Mbale

Total Budget: $100,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

The Rotary Club of La Jolla will partner with the Rotary Club of Mbale, to provide computer skills training, life skills, job skills, entrepreneurship skills and women's empowerment skills to enable and advance economic empowerment in Mbale, Uganda, a disadvantaged region where the population is living in abject poverty. Additionally, students in government schools without computers and access to the Internet are at a disadvantage without appropriate tools to improve their academic performance.

Therefore, Rotary Club of Mbale will partner with U-TOUCH.org which in 2012, opened its Technology Hub in the rural villages of eastern Uganda. The Technology Hub offers free computer training and Internet access to those most in need and eager to learn with a commitment to advancing their livelihoods and that of their family and community.

In these last eight years U-TOUCH has graduated and certified over 5500 students

while providing a variety of related life, work, health, communication, entrepreneurship and digital art skills.

The Rotary Global Grant will provide funding to equip Mbale with two Technology Innovation Hubs. One Hub will be designated for the youth of the Mbale community located at the Rotary Park to advance employment and entrepreneurship, through free theory and practical education and training courses in computer skills with Internet access, life skills, job skills, entrepreneurship skills, and women's empowerment skills. The target population of the Technology Hub will include, unemployed and underemployed youth of the Mbale community. The direct beneficiaries of this project will include community members both male and females with an emphasis on including women who have been

previously marginalized and alienated from the workplace and youth 12 - 25 years out of school.

The second Technology Innovation Hub will be located at Fariway Primary School which will be designated for students and faculty. The goals of the Technology Innovation Hub at Fairway Primary School is to provide computer skills training for faculty and students to advance educational opportunities by improving academic performance

The estimated number of direct beneficiaries will include, teachers and students as well as the general youth population who will directly benefit from the service opportunities.
