Blood is a precious gift that saves human lives. Man, unfotunately, has not yet discovered a way to make blood. It has to be donated only by fellow men/women. During emergencies, a donor, meeting the requirementscan not always be located. Blood, therefore, needs to be stored for such emergencies necessiating a blood bank for storge and distribution.
Blood banks have to meet stringent conditions for safety and require a huge outlay. In India blood banks are set up by the government mostly in in cities. This is augumented by a few private agencies and voluntary organisations like Rotary and Lions. The needs are not fully met and more blood banks are required. Yet another problem is that the private agencies charge a premium. The poor at large is under duress.
It is proprosed to set up a blood bank at Madurai under the Rotary banner. This will be set up with a Trust hospital of high repute and philanthrophy.
The blood bank, under the supervision and guidance of a qualified medical offices, will have all the sophiscated equipment needed for bleeding, storage, separation and issue of whole blood or its components. It will have full fledged laboratory manned by competent staff.
The blood bank will meet all the stipulations laid down by the director of drugs control(Tamilnadu) at the state level and the Drugs Controller General (India) at the federal level. A licence to operate the bank is mandatory and will be issued by them.
Visits were made to a few boold banks and the cost of the equipment to set up the bank complete with laboratory will cost around INR 60 lakhs or 120,000USD.
Agreement in principle has been reached with the Trust Hospital for them to make infrastructure (building) and medical and lab staff available for the blood bank. A formal MOU will be sugned with them once the proposal is accepted by TRF over funding and international partners are located. The District 3000 will also make available DDF funds.
