Project_ Early detection of speech and hearing disability and treatment to children below ten years

It has been found that 7o% adult speech and hearing abnormalities could have been prevented if they had undergone an ENT examintion before they attained the age of ten years

The project envisages conducting ENT medical camps in schools,identify children who have these impairments and arrange for treatmen.To begin with ENT camps will be conducted in Madurai city which has 260 nursey,primary and middle school where children of this age group are studying.Later it will be extended to all the 1400 schools in Madurai revenue district where ther are around 330,000 sudents.It is planned to spend two days in a week for ENT camps and each day two to three schools will be covered. The team will have a qualified docor assisted by two nurses and a general assistant.A driver of the vechile to be procured exclusively for this purpose will transport the staff to the schools

Besky Trust Hospital in Madurai.which has conducted several ENT camps under Rotary banner.for a number of years will be Rotary's partner in service and provide the qualified doctors,nurses and general assistants

Annually 150 camps are planned.The recurring cost for themedical staff,driver,costof fuel, the maintenace of the vehicle and boarding and lodging chatges of staff when tey travel to other districts of Rotay DT 3000 works out to INR 627500 or 12550 USD will be borne by the Besky trust hospital

The team will work under the guidance of Dr M M Savairaj a WHOexpert who worked under United Nations DevelopmentProject in Ghana,Nigeria and Sirealone during 1976 to 1980

The nonrecrring expenditure works out toINR 1744,307(34886 USD) as below

This cost is to Rotary to be obtained by a Global grant

In the first year of operation it will benefit around 160,000 children.The programme will be conducted for a period of five years
