Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Ghana

Location: Obuasi

Total Budget: $124,423

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

Ghana clean water project GG-20-11510 will drill nineteen new boreholes and build 37 household Microflush toilets in Ghana. Our goal is to provide communities with clean water and sanitation in poor communities in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. We will implement small-town water systems for two communities and will repair one borehole. We will provide 80 micro-credit loans for boreholes, Microflush toilets, farms and small businesses to improve the economic strength of two communities and reduce the impact of the coronavirus. The project funding goal is $124,402 to impact more than 14,625 lives. The communities impacted are in the Obuasi area near Kumasi, Ghana. Our grant will be submitted by 30 June 2020. We need your support to meet our funding goals.

The Rotary Club of Montreal Canada will be the international Rotary Club and Jean Gagnon will be the primary international partner. Rotary Clubs can contribute toward this project to get matching funds from their district and The Rotary Foundation. President Abdul Tahir Mumin of Obuasi Rotary Club will be the leader of the host Rotary Club.

All communities will provide local leadership, labor and funding. The communities will raise over $670 toward repairing or replacing the existing hand pumps. Walter Hughes of the Rocky Mount Rotary Club, VA, is supporting the implementation effort. He's led more than 30 Rotary projects in Ghana for the last 13 years. He can be reached at 540-493-4715 or via email at walterkhughes@gmail.com . Jean Gagnon can be reached at +1 514-910-6667 or at jeangagnon@yahoo.ca. Help transform lives of people in Ghana with our project!

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
