Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Benin

Location: Cotonou

Total Budget: $35,950

Area of Focus: Maternal and child health

• Introduction (brief description of the community, the conditions and the project)

The National Teaching Hospital Hubert Koutoukou MAGA in Cotonou (CNHU-HKM) is the largest hospital in Benin and is therefore the last resort in providing medical care to children.

Its Pediatric unit which receives around 3000 children a year, is in a deplorable condition both in terms of health care and in logistics.

Indeed, working in a difficult environment in terms of hygiene (see pictures), the staff is often asked to financially support the needy in health emergency especially in the determination of blood group, blood transfusion and administration of medicine required in emergency cases.

This explains the high mortality rate (10%) recorded in the centre despite the expertise, the dedication to work and the goodwill of the staff of this centre.

• Specific needs

The specific needs of the centre are summarized as follows:

 Need to determine the blood of poor children received in emergency and provide blood transfusion;

 Need of drugs for the provision of medical care in emergency cases;

 Need for improvement of the health care environment for the children and the working conditions for staff;

 Need for equipment for the neonatal unit

• Project description

This project aims to meet within our means the needs listed above through support to the staff in the provision of health care in emergency cases, the logistical support and the improvement of the environment for the children admitted in the unit.

It revolves around three components :

1st component

Provision to the Pediatric unit of vouchers for blood determination, blood bags and a number of drugs used in emergency cases.

This component meets the first two needs listed above.

2nd component

Improvement of the health care environment and the working conditions through:

 Provision of 90 mattresses and covers ;

 Renovation of 90 beds and bedside tables

 Painting and decoration of fourteen (14) wards

 Electrical works (lamps, ceiling fans, etc.) and plumbing works.

This component meets the third need listed above.

3rd component

This third component which meets the last need consists in the provision of equipment to the Neonatal unit.

• Project beneficiaries

The project beneficiaries are:

 For the renovated rooms : the users of the centre that is about 3000 children a year with their mothers who will now be received in better conditions of hygiene and health care safety.

 For the donations of drugs, vouchers for blood group determination and blood bags: the needy people.
