FOCUS AREA:
This is a large-scale water conservation project with a focus on agricultural irrigation and drinking water in drought-stricken tribal villages in Pune District, about 100 km north of Pune City. The project provides rainwater storage and percolation by digging 5 pits of 8000 cum volume each in Villages.
PROJECT NEED:
The aim of this Rotary project is to provide drinking water, water for cattle fodder & agricultural irrigation facilities throughout the year for Tribal villages. This project will fund excavation equipment for digging 20 pits benefitting 6500 villagers. Providing deeper storage facilities that increase water percolation, resulting in rise of the water tables of numerous wells and borewells in the vicinity. About 1500 acres of agricultural land in the area will benefit from this project. This will enable villagers to have water for drinking purposes for their cattle & agriculture (irrigation) year-round, thus raising the local economy (multiple crops per year) & reducing migration to the urban areas.
The local beneficiaries will be involved in the survey, construction (labor), and ongoing maintenance, with all rental equipment of porcelains & construction expertise provided by the vendors & Rotary. The project execution (by vendors) will be managed by Rotary & beneficiary families involved in maintenance & sustenance. The projected life of the project is 20+ years.
