Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Grahamstown

Total Budget: $400,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

This project will build upon the collaborative water and sanitation projects already completed by the Rotary Club of Grahamstown with the support of the Rotary Club of Jackson Hole in the Grahamstown/Makhanda schools. These projects have established consistent daily running water, filtered water for drinking (and consumption through the School Nutrition Programs) and have repaired all leaks at the seven identified schools. This current global grant will allow us to perform significant renovation to all toilet blocks at these schools as well as provide significant improvements to the kitchens utilized for the National School Nutrition Programs. Furthermore, when appropriate, rainwater capture potential will be improved through repair and renovation of roofs and gutters at select schools.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.

Funding table adjusted to show fully funded. Amounts noted against clubs and DDF (whether noted here as approved or not) are considered funded as the District's did authorize the funds on GG2229954 at TRF. Numerous private donations are included in the "other" funds from approximately 70 individuals. Individual donations are being passed through the Jackson Hole Rotary Club Foundation for donor tax advantage. If the donor does not wish Paul Harris Points, the donation will go directly from Jackson Hole Foundation to the project account in Grahamstown South Africa. matchinggrants.org software does not recognize some donors. Noted here is $2,000 from WASH Action Group. The project is considered fully funded. kls 4/13/2022

We have appointed a professional project manager to oversee the implementation of the project. That contract is signed. The preferred contractors for each school have been asked to resubmit their tenders taking into account escalating building costs and revised specification for individual schools. It is expected that contracts will be awarded later this month and implementation start in August. Training on water and hygiene is being lined up to start before actual implementation to help the children understand what is happening at their school.
