Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Tiruchengode

Total Budget: $30,500

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Tiruchengode is a small town in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu. There are nearly 175,000 households with a population of nearly 650,000 in and around the Town. Tiruchengode Government Hospital is run by the Government of Tamilnadu providing free medical treatment and health care to the poor people living in and around Tiruchengode. Everyday 1000 -1200 poor people visit this hospital for their medical and health needs. 120 -150 deliveries happen every month. As the Hospital gets complicated cases referred by the Primary Health Centres, the number of critical cases and critical deliveries are also more. Nearly 60 - 90 cases undergo Caesarean section every month. Births of preterm babies are quite common.

On discussing with the Hospital management, the concerned Doctors, and other stakeholders it has been found essential that the Hospital needs some more equipment to handle the Caesarean section cases and other complicated cases; and to plan, take precautions, continually monitor and render safe and fearless delivery experience to the mothers; and also detect anomalies in the babies early and start corrective medical treatment at the right time. On detailed discussions, it has been ascertained that the following equipment, costing around INR. 3,863,403/- or US $ 55,191, are needed. These equipment will help the Doctors and health staff to plan, take precautions, continually monitor and render safe and fearless delivery experience to the mothers; and also detect anomalies in the babies early and start corrective medical treatment at the right time. These will result in safe and secure deliveries and also avoid the babies from developing avoidable anomalies. This initiative will help 500 - 600 mothers and 150 - 250 babies year after year.

Equipment intended to be procured: Anesthesia Workstation, Ultra Sound Machine for Ante- Natal Mothers, OAE (Otoacoustic Emissions) Machine, Multipara Monitor for Ante-Natal Mothers, CTG (Cardiotocography) Machine and Oxygen Concentrator.

Training will be provided to Village Health Nurses to identify potential cases of unnatural deliveries, potential risk involving cases and cases to be under continuous monitoring; and also training will be provided to Village Health Nurses on First-aid and emergency-aid to the pregnant women.

How the project will meet those needs: With the additional equipment, the Doctors and the Staff nurses will be able to handle the Caesarean section cases and other complicated cases better and with assurance; and also will be able to plan, take precautions, continually monitor and render safe and fearless delivery experience to the mothers; and also will be able to detect anomalies in the babies early and start corrective medical treatment at the right time. This will save a lot of valuable lives of underprivileged mothers and also give them safe and fearless delivery experience; this will also save a lot of lives of babies with anomalies. With the training provided to Village Health Nurses, they will be able to identify the potential cases of unnatural deliveries, potential risk involving cases and cases to be under continuous monitoring; and also will be able to give First-aid and Emergency-aid to the pregnant women.
