Helping Atlantic Forest

History Logs

Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: Jundiai

Total Budget: $74,200

Area of Focus: The environment

Mata Ciliar literally means riparian forest. It is also a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO)

based in Jundiaí, a town around 60 km away from São Paulo, Brazil. The whole Brazilian coast is

known for a biome named Atlantic Forest, considered one of the main biodiverse in the world.

However, this biome is also one of the most threatened in the country, where less than 3% of

its original cover remains. Serra do Japi is a city natural park located at Jundiaí and other three

towns with more than 350 km2 that is located at Atlantic Forest and composes the Greenbelt of

the great São Paulo, helping to regulate local climate, hydric balance and maintain biodiversity.

Besides environmental education activities, Mata Ciliar is an organization that shelters, treats

and releases different animals in Serra do Japi.

Nevertheless, the amount of animals has increased intensively in the recent years, mainly

because of urban pressure. According to the chart below, 21 animals are daily sheltered by Mata

In addition, the yellow fever outbreak that occurred 2018 affected Brazilian population, but also

for a monkey gender named Alouatta. Unfortunately, several species were victims of the virus

of yellow fever but also of humans that wanted to keep the animals away. In such context, the

amount of Alouatta has decreased and Mata Ciliar has made an effort for reproducing, growing

and releasing these animals in nature.

In order to keep such initiatives, Mata Ciliar structure needs constant improvement and two are

the most needed at this moment:
