Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Nakuru

Total Budget: $30,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Children Creative Centers offer children from the informal urban settlements (slums) of Nakuru a structured weekend program involving READING, CREATING and PLAY. Children start by individually reading assorted picture and board books. This is followed by a session of Creative activities (art and painting, beadwork, crocheting, drama and public speaking) and finally ends with PLAY (outdoor plays including soccer, badminton, table tennis, basketball and indoor games with Chess, Ludo, Checkers, Snakes & Ladders). Breakout sessions between the activities are filled with songs and dance.

With no open/public spaces available in the slums, Children Creative Centers offer these children from marginalized and vulnerable families a safe and comfortable place to enjoy their childhood by playing, socializing with age mates while engaging in constructive and learning activities that help inculcate good values and behavior which eventually lead to good character development. All these activities are done under the close watch of volunteers who faithfully guide the kids by helping them to read, write, draw, paint and tell their stories. Reading and Creative activities are done under large tents.

The children break for snacks and take lunch at 1.00 O'clock before proceeding with Play activities for the rest of the day. For most of these children, this is the only decent meal they get in a day.

With an average of 250 children walking into the Center every weekend, the center lacks enough chairs, tables and tents to accommodate the children. There is also shortage of stationery(art supplies, paper, pencils, crayons, plasticine/clay),Sports supplies(balls, nets, rackets, chessboards, monopoly boards and other indoor games) and Foodstuffs(basic cereals like rice, flour, sugar, cooking oil). The other needs identified are handwashing stations and repairs of washrooms.Project funds will purchase the listed items and buy storage cabinets

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
