Areas of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene, Community economic development
A large numbers of India's poorest population live in the country's semi-arid tropical region. In this area water shortage and droughts result in frequent failure of crops thereby risking the livelihoods of people. This condition is directly correlated with key elements of poverty, including restriction of opportunity to subsistence activity, unemployment, increasing migration, higher rate of malnutrition among children, increasing rate of school dropout etc.
The state of Rajasthan is a desert and gets rainfall which is far below the national rainfall; with their economies largely dependent on rain-fed agriculture, the irregular rainfall causes serious damage to the farmers greatly affecting their livelihoods. The socio-economic conditions of Rajasthan is amongst the lowest in India with increasing unemployment, low per capita income, widespread poverty and overall decline in the human development index.
It is proposed to undertake rain water harvesting project in Pali district in Rajasthan.
