Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Hubli, Karnataka

Total Budget: $79,923

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

Objective : Providing components of blood for treatment of Leukemia, Dengue fever, Severe Anemia, Chemotherapy patients, Thrombophilia, Idiopathic Thrombocytopenic Purpura(ITP) etc. In this pandemic even COVID 19 patients require plasma for treatment.

Need: This equipment will be installed at M R Diagnostic Blood Bank and Research center. Its a partially government run center. The Blood Bank is licensed for collection and storage of whole blood for distribution. Every year 6,500 to 7,000 units of whole blood are collected by the Blood Bank. 60-70% of the collected blood is used within the city and district and 30-40% is issued to other districts on request. In spite of the scale, around 100 patients every month are referred to other center for platelet transfusion and other blood components. In addition, during each holiday season, there are at least a few mass casualty incidents (due to traffic accidents) where multiple patients come in at the same time. Blood component separation equipment is increasingly becoming a necessity to provide better services to this community. The blood bank at present is issuing 600 units of whole blood every month. It receives a demand for components every day. If installed this Apheresis equipment will cater to 13 lakh population of the district. Every month around 20 major Blood donation camps are conducted. Every day on an average 10 volunteers come and donate at the blood bank.

Fund management : Funds will be used for procurement and Installation of the machine,

Club members will be involved in volunteering to donate blood and also Organizing blood donation camps, where community members will also participate to donate blood.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
