Concepts of Grid Water Lifting project at Bhedekharka, Jaimini Municipality, Baglung

Background

Water is one of the basic human needs, however large numbers of the Nepalese population is devoid of access to safe and adequate drinking water and thus having water pollution and water borne diseases. Many remote rural villages have limited to the access of water and have to rely on small brooks running from the mountains and spend hours traveling to get water. The drinking water available is not always safe as supplied water is often polluted. The domestic sewage system is one of the top sources of water pollution that seeps into rivers and lakes, which are the primary sources of drinking water. In some of the rural regions of Nepal, communities still depend on getting their drinking water from tube wells. In Terai, region the groundwater is contaminated from arsenic. The Terai Region contains sedimentary layers of sand, gravel deposits interlocked with flood plains carried by rivers and is extremely vulnerable to arsenic contamination.

Only 27 percent of the population has access to basic sanitation, those without access rely on local surface water sources like rivers for bathing and washing clothes. At the same time, the establishments of water treatment facilities throughout the rural regions are limited. As a result, Nepal faces a high number of water-borne diseases such as diarrhoea, dysentery, typhoid, gastroenteritis and cholera. Children under the age of five are the mostly affected and dying every year in Nepal from waterborne diseases. Nepal struggles to overcome this obstacle and needs solutions to eradicate this so that its citizens can live healthier lives.

Safe drinking water is one of the focus area of Rotary International and thus all Rotarians are putting their best effort in the water management for the needy community. Nepal water for health (NEWAH) is working in Baglung District since more than 10 years who is willing to work with Rotary in this project. Most of the area of Baglung has still water scarcity problem. We are proposing water lifting projects in Jaimini Municipality (i.e. Bhedikharka). There is huge water scarcity. Sources of water are located below in the village.Nearly 51 house holds and 270 people including one school students are directly benefitted from this project.

Grid lifting is done in Bhedekharka site Jaimini Municipality ward no 10 at Baglung. The tentative budget is USD 54790. Out of this nearly USD 17,580 is managed by the local govt., $ 6091 will be contributed by the communities (both cash and kinds) and rest of the USD 41,951 should be funded by the rotary clubs and Rotary International as presented in the Table 1.
