Project "A HAND TO WALK" aims to provide knee replacement surgery to poor patients who are disabled by knee arthritis. This is phase three of our ongoing project. Last year we secured a global grant for the project, and completed 51 such surgeries free of cost, to deserving patients.
The patients/beneficiaries are selected through a three stage selection process.
1. An initial medical assessment by orthopedic surgeon. During the pandemic, this entire assessment will be done online and through telephonic interviews. All relevant documents including xrays and blood results and concurrent diseases are evaluated to assess the suitability of surgery. Online assessment completely avoids the need for personal contact this reducing the risk of covid spread. If found suitable selected beneficiaries move on to next stage.
2. Assessment of financial status. This stage is also done online by verifying government issued financial status indicators such as "ration cards"and. "Income certificates". Beneficiaries are requested to submit a copy online of the same which is then verified by a committee.
3. After the initial assessment by the committee, we request a referral letter from the local elected government representative. We also request a referral from the nearest rotary club to ensure fair selection.
Once the beneficiary completes all three stages, they are called on for an in+person medical examination by the operating team, this includes a pre anaesthesia check up and further tests if necessary. This is done free of cost at the partner hospital.
All surgeries are done by experienced surgeons using the standard facilities of the partner hospital. Only high end imported implants will be used, and the entire hospital expenses including stay and food will be covered under the project.
This year, our plan is to do 75 knee replacement surgeries at a total project cost of $100000. We already have a list of potential beneficiaries from last year's project.
We are looking for international partners for the project as well as funding.
