Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: Kenya

Location: Nairobi

Total Budget: $70,000

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

The principal goal of the project is to provide access to water to more than 7,000 who have to travel long distances to the nearest seasonal water point, a seasonal river. It also aims at providing water for livestock and an opportunity for irrigation hence affordable vegetables for seven villages. This will lead to improvement of living standards and economic empowerment. The 7,000 people live in seven villages namely: Ndulikye, Nzanzu, Kinanie, Nditime, Masikalini, Kamwiu, Ivitasyaa, Masungu and Kyoani. The members of households in these village walk over 30km to the River Thua (a seasonal river), and back, 60km, making it a full day affair. Donkeys aid this process carrying Jeri cans, and where a household does not have one, then the problem is magnified. There is clearly a need to improve access to water for these communities to improve living standards and enhance economic development. The availability of the assets listed and the willingness of the community to participate in the project cements the need to implement the project's primary goal.

DDF contributions in grey are pending approval of the corresponding district committee.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
