In a developing country like India where 1/6th of the world population lives have an acute shortage of quality healthcare and this problem is much more evident when we move to the smaller towns and villages. Rotary Club of Jeypore Pride is based in such a small town known as Jeypore of Koraput District in the Southern part of Odisha. One of the most undeveloped district Koraput where people get killed due to the presence of LWE (Left Wing Extremism) elements have a dearth of Doctor and Healthcare professionals.
Rotary Club of Jeypore Pride is slowly but certainly able to touch many lives by arranging many Health Camps, Eye Screening Camps and Conducting Cataract Surgeries Free of Cost, removing the darkness literally by help of its Doctors who are proud members of Rotary Club of Jeypore Pride.
Koraput is a part of the tribal belt in southern Odisha. As the term tribal often denotes a negative connotation the indigenous people here prefer to be known as Adivasis, i.e. "original inhabitants."The traditional culture, knowledge and subsistence of the Adivasis are closely connected to the local ecosystems.
District has total area of 8,807 Square KM out of which 172 square km is semi urban and 8635 square km is rural. Total population 15,31,409, out of which only 2,26,167 semi urban and 11,53,478 rural population. The terrain is hilly, covered with forests, rivers and waterfalls. This makes travelling difficult for the entire population. During the monsoon travelling to town area like Jeypore is a big task and expensive affair as it rains continuously for months. In the villages there is a dearth of specialised medical facilities. Villagers are dependent on Primary Health Care Centres (PHCs) where no specialised eye care facilities are available.
Being a tribal culture the literacy rate as well as income of the people are very low. Difficulties in travelling and expenses are the biggest hindrances for the rural population to come to Jeypore Town where specialised eye care facilities are available. Hence for them preventable blindness goes unnoticed.
Not only the district of Koraput but nearby districts like Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, Rayagada which were part of undivided Koraput are also dependent on the Jeypore Town especially for the Specialised Eye Care facilities.
Due to the above facts proud members of Rotary Club of Jeypore Pride sat together and have decided for a Service Project of EYE SCREENING AMBULANCE for maximum impact to cure avoidable blindness in this vast hilly area. However, this mega project needs support from Rotary Foundation.
Through the ambulance we can provide a plethora of services like Phacoemulsification Cataract Surgery, Gloucoma Surgery, Refractive Surgery to remove glasses, pterygium excision, Oculoplastic surgeries, Conjunctival autografting, chalazion Incision and drainage, DCR, DCT, evisceration, enucleation, and emergency surgeries like Corneal tear repair, Lid repair as per the requirement of the patient.
Patients from lower socio-economic strata will get such super specialised treatment with utmost care by highly competent doctors and staff.
The tests which can be routinely performed in the well-equipped Ambulance includes Refraction, Slit Lamp examination, Intravascular Pressue, Goldmann Applanation Tonometer, Retinal examination, Direct/Indirect and GOD Ophthalmoscopy, A-Scan, Biometry for Intraocular lens calculation.
Detailed history can be collected and a thorough outpatient and inpatient workup by our team of Doctors, Technicians and Staff can be planned.
We aspire to give super speciality services to the poor and underprivileged, who cannot travel to the nearest super speciality eye hospital 250 KMs away from Koraput District in case of any emergency or otherwise. WE ASPIRE TO MAKE THIS POOREST PART OF THE WORLD BLIND FREE IN EVERY POSSIBLE MANNER.
