Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Pretoria

Total Budget: $150,000

Area of Focus: The environment

Lack of knowledge of the significant role of bees in the ecosystem by the general populace. In addition, poverty can be alleviated through honey production. Climate Change is affecting many agricultural enterprises and thus small scale farmers will learn how to integrate climate change adaptation strategies enabled by planting honey bee friendly plants that are also friendly for the environment, by sinking carbon emissions.

The duration of the project is five years and the funds will be used for the following:

Supplying rural women and youth with sustainable beehives; protective clothing, and tools of the trade

Training project participants on the fundamentals of beekeeping

Setting up food forests for the benefit of bees and poor communities

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
