Proposal Form

The District Global Grant for Ecuador addresses two of the six priorities established by The Rotary Foundation under the Future Vision Pilot Program, Priority #4 Maternal/Child Health and Priority #5 Basic Education and Literacy. The proposal is to establish pilot projects in five Community Schools for preschool, K-8 students involving parents. Two of the schools will be in Quito (Juan Carlos Peralta and Juan Diego), two in Guayaquil (Los Lojas and Daular), one in Cuenca (Guardian de la Fes). Four are government schools and one private (Los Lojas). All are situated in low-income neighborhoods.

The intent of the Community Schools is to provide sound educational practices addressing intellectual and motor skills to stimulate the brain. An example will be the "Brain Gym" program which uses a unique body movement exercise to assist children in reading and math. Other interventions such as "Odyssey of the Mind" may also be used to foment group work and cooperative problem solving. Additionally, creative activities such as drama and music will enhance self-esteem. A nutritious diet, such as soy milk from Mechanical Cows which is high in protein will produce more alert students for more successful academic achievement. Parents and community members will be afforded the opportunity to be participants in the experience of their offspring. To make this work, it will take in-service training for teachers and staff to accomplish the goals and objectives of the Community School program.

Considering the unique location of the five pilot schools-Coast and Andes-and with some linguistic and cultural differences, each school will have an overall plan that will provide a stimulating curriculum using critical thinking and motor skills, integrated services-medical, nutrition, recreational-and wide participation of parents and community members.

The Primary Host Club for District 4400 will be Quito Equinoccio Rotary with the primary contact person being Dr. Rosalia Arteaga who is the former Minister of Education and Social Services for Ecuador. In that capacity she has obtained a broad understanding of the needs of the country. She will be working closely with the five Rotary Club Coordinators (Quito, Quito Equinoccio, Guayaquil La Puntilla, Guayaquil Cerro Azul, and Cuenca Tomebamba. The Cooperating Organization for the Project will be Fundación Educando at Ecuador. The Primary International Club will be La Mesa Sunrise Rotary, District 5340 with the key contact Dr. David Ballesteros who has a vast experience with schools and universities both in the United States and Latin America.
