The Children's Hospital of Tlaxcala (HIT) has been noteworthy, since its opening in 2016, owing to it being the only hospital in the state capable of highly complex cardiac surgery in pediatric patients. It is able to carry out this procedure because it houses the specialized equipment necessary to treat complex congenital heart disease. The Extracorporeal Circulation Machine (ECM) is such an example, and this particular piece of equipment allows a surgeon to suspend cardiac activity in order to perform corrective surgery required to restore the heart's function(s). The ECM operates as the heart would, at the same time oxygenating the patient's blood going to his or her lungs.
The Children's Hospital of Tlaxcala's Extracorporeal Circulation Machine has been in use for 16 years. During this period, surgery has been performed on 540 children from not only the state of Tlaxcala but also its neighboring states.
