The project seeks to provide drinking water to 5 rural schools in the municipality of Taxco de Alarcón in the state of Guerrero, Mexico. These schools have water shortages and the little water they have is of poor quality. Situation that has led to suspension of classes due to lack of water and outbreaks of gastrointestinal diseases. So we see viable the implementation of comprehensive rainwater harvesting systems.
The municipality of Taxco de Alarcón, Guerrero in Mexico, has approximately 110,000 inhabitants, half of them in rural communities where many of them have a serious problem of water scarcity. The schools of these communities do not escape this situation, since, not having enough water or water free of pathogens, leads to a reduction in school days, school dropout and the appearance of gastrointestinal diseases because due to the lack of sanitation, limited sources of water supply such as artisanal wells and rivers are contaminated by domestic wastewater.
More than half of primary schools in Taxco Guerrero lack adequate water facilities and nearly two-thirds lack adequate sanitation. This situation means that thousands of children in the municipality go to schools that do not have clean drinking water or latrines, basic elements that we take for granted must exist in schools in developed countries.
Providing better quality water as well as water, sanitation and hygiene services in schools reduces hygiene-related diseases. Among children under the age of 14, more than 20 percent of deaths and disabilities are attributed to poor water quality as well as poor hygiene.
The Rotary Club Taxco A.C. seeing the situation of the lack of water in Taxco, has decided to take action, constantly working on the issue of water supply and sanitation. Concerned about children and their education, we have managed resources to install rainwater harvesting systems that allow children in schools in the municipality to have access to quality water with very good results in previous projects, but the need is very great in many of these rural communities.
Due to the climatic conditions of the site, these systems turn out to be a very feasible option to reduce the problem since we have a period of 6 months of frequent rains and another 6 months of sporadic rains, having an approximate annual rainfall of 1150 mm.
The project seeks to have an integral management of the collection and use of rainwater, so it is integrated with 3 components:
1.Rainwater Harvesting Systems.
2.Installation of drinking fountains with a purification system.
3.Demonstrative school garden.
With these components what is sought is not only to capture water for use by school toilets, but also the water will be purified so that it can be drunk and by also increasing the storage capacity, demonstrative school backyard gardens will be installed, seeking to advance towards sustainability.
The main objectives are as follows:
* Provide sufficient and quality water to students and teachers of the 5 rural schools
* Promote the rational use and care of water in the school community
* Use rainwater harvesting water for toilets, drinking fountains and the demonstration school garden.
*Encourage the consumption of purified water as a healthy habit instead of the consumption of sugary drinks.
* Implementation of the demonstrative school garden for the production of vegetables for self-consumption, as well as a tool to promote environmental education in the school community.
In the following table are the proposed schools that meet the characteristics of lack of water, sufficient space for installation, adequate roofs for rainwater collection, high number of beneficiaries and willingness of the school community to implement the project, benefiting a total of 1273 students and 45 teaching staff in total 1318 beneficiaries.
