Project Description

Region: North America

Country: Mexico

Location: Tijuana

Total Budget: $30,000

Area of Focus: Basic education and literacy

Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente has identified junior high schools in low-income communities that lack computer equipment. To resolve this issue, junior high schools were preselected to have a computer lab installed based on the following requirements: secure classroom with locks and window and door security bars, classroom used exclusively for computer classes, furniture, air conditioning, proper electrical wire installation to support the equipment, school's commitment to maintain, repair, and replace equipment. Access to computers will provide technology related instruction to prepare students to be successful now and in the future. This project will fund 4 computer labs. Each computer lab will have 40 computers and 1 laser printer installed. We estimate that the 4 computer labs will be installed within one year.

Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente has been installing computer labs for over five years. In the 2021-2022 Rotary year, the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club and Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente worked together to install a computer lab in a junior high school in a low-income community in Tijuana. The inauguration took place in May 2022. The Clubs are currently in the process of installing a second computer lab together. To date Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente has installed 20 computer labs. Each lab benefits approximately 550 students per year. Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente identifies the schools, inspects the classrooms to confirm they meet the requirements, oversees the installation of the computer labs, follows up with each school, and provides replacement equipment at a cost below market value. They report that the project has been a huge success. The La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club is committed to working with Club Rotario Tijuana Agua Caliente to ensure that the project continues to be successful.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
