Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: Vietnam

Location: Phu Loc District

Total Budget: $28,000

Areas of Focus: Community economic development, The environment

Education and Outreach

Animals Asia will be reaching out to local communities across the country to raise awareness about the plight of bears in Vietnam, while working to reduce demand for bear parts and build support for bear conservation. We offer free traditional medicine clinics prescribing herbal alternatives to bear bile. The clinics are conducted by Vietnam Traditional Medicine Association doctors with a focus on replacing the use of bear bile. These are key opportunities to engage with local communities, raise awareness and reduce the demand for bear products. The free medicines provided in the clinics come from "Herbal Alternative Gardens" which are established and tended locally.

The project provides emplyment opportunity to bear farmers who have surrendered the bears and it will educate the community on safe herbal alternatives.

Animals Asia has reached a landmark agreement with the Vietnam Government to end bear bile farming. The hearb garden is part of the bear recue center which is already in construction. Land is provided by the government.

Funds needed USD 80,000 for building and maintaining the gardens for 3 years

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
