The "Hogar San José de la Montaña" is a foster home located very close to Medellín, in a small city called Sabaneta. In one of these neighborhoods in the suburban area, there is this foster home that houses 60 girls, 13 nuns who take care of the home and 4 workers.
The reason why the girls live in the San José de la Montaña home, is that they are in a psico social high-risk status, due to their parents being drug addicts, peddlers, or with long working hours away from home and the childs are frequently alone in home
The religious congregation has lived in this house for more than 12 years, and to operate the shelter they have coffee trees whose harvest they sell every year, sell some groceries they cultivate and eggs as well, which is not enough to cover all the expenses, being the most important financial source, some donations offered by people of the community. With it they try to pay for public services, workers' salaries, social security, food and hygiene supplies. They sporadically sell lunches whenever they realize that their budget is not enough to pay the monthly installments.
The general objective of the Aquaponics project is to generate a permanent source of economic resources for Hogar San José de la Montaña, through the construction and development of an Aquaponics system (agricultural and fish farming), which allows strengthening the food security of the 60 minors and their families who depend on the Home, training in its management and also empowering the girls and adolescents who reside there, in an entrepreneurial trade with respect and care for the environment, with discipline and responsibility.
