Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Bengaluru

Total Budget: $39,000

Area of Focus: None

Objective - To improve mobility and independence in patients affected by stroke / head injury by providing physiotherapy using state of art equipment.

A growing incidence of stroke in low- and mid-income group has been reported in various forums and is on the rise every year in India. The average age of incidence is 54 years and it is observed that 12% of strokes occur in the population aged <40 years. The common after-effects of stroke are paralysis of limbs and speech difficulties. This results in loss of livelihood and increased dependence on a family member. Statistics from WHO reveals that stroke is the 4th leading cause of disability and loss of livelihood. Due to limited rehabilitation centers in Bangalore, the recovery and return to livelihood for stroke affected patients is a slow and arduous process. To prevent disability due to paralysis after a stroke / head injury. To provide physio therapy for stroke / head injury patients from low socio economic group for 6 months or more with clear objectives:

The goals of the project are,

1.To reach out to maximum number of underprivileged stroke patients for physio therapy.

2.To Restore maximum percentage of strength and mobility of limbs of these patients

3. Facilitate savings to the patients' expenditure by subsidizing cost of treatment.

4. Improvement in the quality of life of patients.

We have reached out to Primary Health Care Centers in North Bangalore, and have found lack of such fascility in this region. These centers are catering to mainly lower economic strata of the society who need help and cannot afford high costs.

Our club Rotarians have identified one such center which is providing care to such patients for speech therapy. The physio therapy will add to the fascility of providing care to stroke patients. The club with the help of the District is raising funds . The project is expected to complete in one year.
