We have identified villages in Jawhar, Mokhada of Palghar District in Maharashtra, INDIA where the well water goes very low from the month of March every year. People in the region face water crisis as almost all wells dry during the summer season. The women in the household must walk to fetch water, sometimes travelling miles carrying plastic or earthenware pots, possibly with a child or two in tow, to the nearest safe source -
regularly repeating the journey up to three times a day. In the scorching summer months of April and May, when temperatures regularly exceed 40C, it is a particularly gruelling daily ritual - and when they get home, they must complete their other household chores: cooking, washing, bringing up the children, even helping on the family farm.
The Solution:
The proposed solution to the current problem is to construct subsurface dams. A subsurface dam is a concrete dam that is generally built downstream the existing or a new well. It is built under the surface up to the hard rock. It helps in holding subsurface water and enhances the water table in the area upstream the dam and strengthens the aquifer in the vicinity. It provides water to the wells that become dry for two to three months during
the summer season and thus, making the village self-sufficient for potable water throughout the year. These dams do not affect the agriculture field since it is built subsurface. Creating the underground reservoir by building the subsurface dam will benefit the well by extending the water yielding period by 90 days.
The Project:
RCHE intends to build 10 subsurface dams for such villages. RCHE will collaborate with a Non Government Organisation (NGO) Pragati Pratishtan, donation from International Club, International Grant and District 3142 to successfully build these 10 subsurface dams.
Budgetary Survey by NGO.
Pragati Pratishtan is an NGO, with 50 years of proven track record & experience in Subsoil Check Dams. It has partnered several Global Grants; the estimate is based on Contour / topography Survey of all 10 wells conducted by Hydrology expert engaged by them. Detailed survey shall be conducted before actual execution.

The project will start in October 2023 and end in December 2023, the estimated cost of the project is US$ 48,000/-.
