Project Description Region: Eastern Europe Country: Russia Location: Ulyanovsk Total Budget: $145,000 Areas of Focus: Community economic development, The environment Rotary Club Ulyanovsk is extremely concerned about the high level of environmental pollution, as well as the low involvement of the population in separate garbage collection. That's why the club decided to take for reclamation the old abandoned square with broken asphalt paths in an unsuitable condition neither for recreation nor for sports. The recultivated area will show the citizens sustainable technologies in action (paths made of recycled rubber, solar-powered streetlights, rational landscaping and pets' walks...). The possibility of separate collection of garbage into numerous fractions and a visual demonstration that recyclables are not garbage in the Museum of garbage, located in the Lecture hall - a lightweight educational pavilion made of eco-materials - will be a unique opportunity for the 800-thousandth city. Ulyanovsk is an industrial city in the Middle Volga region, located on the banks of two rivers - the Volga and the Sviyaga. Peculiarities of pollution are both local industry and water environment affected by human activities - a sea of plastic in the rivers, green dense sludge in the summer, the death of river fauna. At the Lecture Hall, club volunteers and educational NGOs will teach everyone, especially children and youth, the basics of ecological life on a regular basis.
