Baja California, Mexico, is experiencing an epidemic of a severe and potentially fatal tickborne disease known as Rocky Mountain spotted fever (RMSF). 46 RMSF deaths, primarily in children were reported in Baja CA from 2020-22. This bacterial disease is spread by ticks prevalent among dogs in and around homes in poor barrios. We will work with the Baja California Health Department (ISESALUD) Baja California and municipal health jurisdictions including Ensenada, Mexicali, Tijuana, and San Quintin to purchase and apply about 2,000 Seresto long-acting insecticidal dog collars in hot spots with RMSF cases, an intervention which has been documented to help reduce dog tick infestations and RMSF cases and deaths in Arizona and Sonora, Mexico. The intervention will begin in San Quintin, the smallest community. ISESALUD and partners will monitor project indicators, no. of collars applied, households educated, reduction in dog tick infestation and RMSF cases.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
