According to a 2021 OIT-UNICEF report, 8.2 million children between the ages of five and seventeen work in Latin America and the Caribbean, and almost fifty percent work in the fields. This type of labor interferes with their health (Quinitero,2021). There are approximately eighty-one million impoverished children in those areas (UNICEF). Latin American governments invest only 1% to 5% of their budgets addressing mental illness, which creates a gap between the necessity to tackle these disorders and the availability of accessible treatment and educational services.
The candidate for the Global Scholarship, who is of Latin American heritage, aspires to study mental illness from the multicultural standpoint and develop treatment that consider environmental factors affect on low-income Latin American children. Her ultimate professional goal is to establish a community center that caters to the mental and emotional needs of children of poverty, offering family counseling services such as stress-coping, decision-making, emotional intelligence, and self-expression through the arts. (Ridley et all) has shown that early-childhood investments greatly affect children's income as adults.
The candidate believes that children require an enriching environment to realize their potential. To build on the candidate's coursework at the University of North Texas, she plans to complete studies for the Master of Science and Neuroscience Degree at the University of Bristol in Bristol, England. The one-year course of study includes collaboration between the Bristol University's Education Department and the Bristol Poverty Institute with its connections with Central and South American countries. Such connections will coincide with the candidate's future efforts to make a significant impact on the lives of Latin American youth and families through education and mental health services.
