Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Colombia

Location: Repelón

Total Budget: $43,610

Area of Focus: Community economic development

BACKGROUND

The Rotary e-Club Colombia Innova and the Mama Lina Social Foundation express their interest in developing a joint community project, aimed at consolidating, promoting and developing community economic initiatives that generate profitability for forty (40) women heads of households who live in Repelón, Atlantico (approximately 90 km from the Caribbean city of Barranquilla, northern Colombia).

These women face multiple great challenges:

• Adversely affected by poverty, malnutrition, human right's violation, some of them also victims of gender-related violence and the country's internal conflict.

• With marginal or no education, no job guarantee and a challenging future for their children.

• Those few who are lucky to get a job, often away from their home, leaving their children alone for 10-12 hours each day, to earn a few "pesos" which is just enough to cover their basic needs.

. Finding how to generate income to maintain their household livelihoods.

From an assessment of the community's needs carried out between October 2021 and January 2023, the Rotary e-Club Colombia Innova identified the need to provide the necessary resources for starting new ventures or strengthening the existing ones, to help these women solve their basic needs and improve their quality of life and that of their families.

ABOUT SUSTAINABILITY OF THIS PROJECT

The Rotary e-Club Colombia Innova wants to implement a process of sustainable support, providing these women with:

a) Life Skills

b) Entrepreneurship Training

c) Partnership Strategies

d) Environment Improvement

e) Transformation and Social Development for their children

WHAT WE WANT TO ACHIEVE:

∙ To empower the eligible "women-headed households" to have access to employment and entrepreneurial opportunities and become financially independent.

∙ To increase their capacity to overcome their many challenges through intensive facilitation, training and workshops aimed at building self-esteem and by increasing technical, decision-making and managerial skills.

∙ To facilitate government and private entities assistance and support for the sustainability of their businesses.

HOW WE WILL DO IT:

Stage 1: Design and execution of specialized training programs and the business plans for each specific area of interest.

Stage 2: Creation of partnerships among them, taking into account their common areas of interest, benefiting from their strengths and minimizing individual risks. 6 initial areas have been already identified: Food industry, Retail shops, Farming, Agriculture, Handcrafts manufacturing , Consumer services.

Stage 3: Provision of financial and educational support for the businesses' start up.

Stage 4: Monitoring and evaluation activities, as well as coaching sessions to ensure sustainable business growth.
