GLOBAL GRANT PROJECT PROPOSAL

PROJECT NAME: HELP AT BIRTH

Maternal and child health should be one of our concerns as the increase of births to teenage mothers has become a fact. The lack of knowledge in the care and prior checks that should have a mother to prevent her baby from developing problems at birth is another major issue in Argentina.

The "Professor Alejandro Posadas" National Hospital is a medical institution that develops assistive tasks of prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of health, plus education and research activities. This institution under the National Ministry of Health is located in the town of Palomar of Morón, Province of Buenos Aires, Argentina. It covers 22 hectares and has 56,000 square metres of floor space spread over 7 floors divided into four pavilions connected by a central area on the first floor and ground floor. Throughout the years, this hospital has specialized in the treatment of difficult births, both of premature and babies suffering from malformations. Out of 4,026 babies born last year 12.6% were premature (less than 37 weeks pregnant, 444 were born weighing less than 2,000 grams). Of the total number of births 25% of mothers do not have an appropiate birth control. Likewise the population of twins in this hospital doubles the total population, so this is epidemiologically significant because 50% of twin-births requires attention in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU).

The population served by the hospital is at low-income and low-education levels.

The members of the Rotary Club of Caseros Norte became aware of the need of this Hospital in terms of high standard equipment for the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit; so the project being stated here has been developed in order to benefit a significant population included in a geographic strip of our District .

NEEDS OF THE COMMUNITY.

Beneficiaries:

It aims to benefit thousands of newborn children not only within the area of Tres de Febrero and Morón - where the National Hospital "Professor Alejandro Posadas" is located- but across the country, as all infants at high risk of survival must be hospitalized in this institution. In the past year 4,026 were born in this hospital out of which 943 children (23.4%) were admitted into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) for whom the use of incubators and "servocunas" (servo-cradles) becomes of essential importance.

Needs of the community:

The community to be served consists of newborns who come from a low-income population, whose mothers -increasingly younger- do not perform pregnancy checks; premature births of infants weighing less than 1,500 gms at perinatal high risk; many serious malformations which imply greater complexity care. The 20% of newborns belongs to mothers under age 19.

Justification for the diagnosis of the situation:

Members of the Rotary Club of Caseros Norte regularly visit the Hospital "Professor Alejandro Posadas". Various surveys -including discussions with doctors and nurses of the institution- have shown its shortcomings and have increased the interest of the rotarian club to favor the hospital in terms of providing them with the necessary equipment to save the lives of newborns.
