School children in Addis Ababa are in tremendous need of reliably safe water. It is prohibitively expensive to buy bottled water. School administrators are constrained to three prevailing options: (1) provide no drinking water; (2) provide contaminated water; or (3) provide purchased water at the expense of other educational priorities.
Rotary and our partner NGO Splash are uniquely well positioned to intervene with an alternative that is attractive to local school leaders: a compact, efficient, point-of-use water purification system appropriate for oversight by school staff in the long range. Such a system rids water of virtually all bacteria, viruses, and pathogens, which number among the greatest health challenges faced by these children. In Ethiopia currently, Splash provides equivalent services, successfully, in 13 schools, 8 orphanages, 5 shelters, and 2 hospitals (for over 14,000 children). The model is proven and it works. Rotary's contacts and experience in Ethiopia go very deep, and both 5030 and 9212 have long experience working with Ethiopia. An overview of Splash's work in Ethiopia may be reviewed here: http://splash.org/where/country/ethiopia
This matching grant will support installation, maintenance, and monitoring of water purification systems in 13 schools and orphanages within Addis Ababa. The thirteen sites will meet two primary criteria: (1) the students are living in poverty; and (2) the primary water source fails water quality tests for safety (per World Health Organization standards).
The systems to transform these conditions are identical to those in use by leading global food service chains (like McDonald's and KFC) to ensure safe water for their paying customers.
As an additional benefit, this matching grant will be even more greatly leveraged by the addition of in-school hygiene education in the 13 new sites, plus in 26 sites who have already received water purification systems. Host Rotarians, RC Addis Ababa West will be active volunteers. The relationship between clean water and effective hygiene practices is well known to be a critical combination for improved health outcomes.
This project will be completed within two years. It will benefit school children-as well as the teachers and staff of each school and their families-by ensuring ten years of water purification services, including monitoring, maintenance, and technical assistance as well as a managed path toward each school supporting the systems independently long into the future.
Rotarians will be able to confirm ongoing project success through both onsite monitoring and an easily navigable online reporting tool. Both the host and International Rotary clubs will be given a unique username and password that will allow them to log on and access the latest project confirmations and updates.
