(An early version of this proposal is posted in the Proposal Form. It may be read for interest, but does not represent the current plan. The current plan follows below.)
Community Needs
There are schools in the impoverished areas of the provinces of Azuay, Carchi, Chimborazo, and Guayas that have inadequate educational resources. There are only a few computers cafes available, and most students cannot afford to use them. The students need computer access, and therefore the schools require computers, printers and computer classrooms. The students need a curriculum that integrates computer knowledge with other academic areas. "Technology across the curriculum" is the concept to be applied.
The schools are listed below along with the numbers of students in each school, and the numbers of computers and printers needed.

The Project
This project is to provide 150 computers and 15 printers to those schools listed above. The computers will be supplied with GNU licenses, the operating system Linux (UBUNTU) and appropriate software by the vendor. Training and supplies will be provided by either the school or the school's parent-teacher organization or both. In the case of the Province of Guayaquil Norte, 40 computers and 3 printers will be located at three strategicaly located computer labs, and will be supported by the Salinas Yacht Club. Posted in the Documents section are the letters that have been received so far expressing interest and promising support.
Benefits
The primary beneficiaries are the approximately 5200 students. In addition, interested family and community members will have access to the computer labs at specified times. Training will be provided by school personnel such as computer engineers that each school will provide. The benefits to the community are that the students, family members and community members, will be able to communicate much better with the acquisition of the latest technology and will also enhance employment opportunities for the students and community members.
Students whose family members are working abroad will be able to make contact with their parents, thus alleviating some personal concerns. Members of Gualaceo, Tulcan, and Cuenca Rotary Clubs will oversee the installation, training, initial operation, and school support of the new computer labs. At an appropriate time there will be a well-publicized transfer of the equipment to the schools.
