Proposal Form

Guayaquil Occidente Rotary Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, District 4400 and La Mesa Sunrise Rotary in La Mesa, California, District 5340 propose to provide ten "Mechanical Cows"(soy bean milk machines) for ten school sites--three in the Sierra, Ambato, Gualaceo (2 cows) in Azuay Province, and seven along the Coast, Greater Guayaquil area (5 cows) in Guayas Province and two in Manta and Bahia de Caraquez in Manabí Province. In addition to Guayaquil Occidente, the Host Club, there are seven other Rotary Clubs collaborating: Ambato, Gualaceo, Guayaquil Cerro Azul, Guayaquil Sur, Guayaquil Norte, Manta, and Bahia de Caraquez. The beneficiaries will be elementary school children with a high incidence of malnutrition and lack of sufficient protein in their diet. The Mechanical Cows are soy bean milk machines that input soy beans and water to produce high protein soy milk and okara. These products in turn can be converted into tofu, bread, cakes, cheese, yogurt and even ice cream with varied flavors. One mechanical cow, the V-40 model originally developed by Pro-Soya in Canada, and now most of them built in India, can feed up to 500 children with an eight ounce glass of the milk, twice a day, for years. The grant proposal budget will also include a large heavy duty refrigerator to keep the milk, other foods, and medications. In addition, a Nutrition component at each school site will bring specialists to discuss healthy food with Cafeteria staff and with parents, particularly mothers of the children, on how best to choose and prepare food at home.

This grant involves 5000 elementary and middle school students, community members, 8 Rotary clubs, and 10 sites in the Andes and Coastal regions. We are in the process of finalizing the hiring of staff and the purchase of equipment and assuring adequate space. We expect all these events to enhance learning and good nutrition of the children.
