Project Description

Region: South America

Country: Brazil

Location: São Paulo

Total Budget: $48,400

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

This Global Grant project will address a critical gap in surgical safety and medical training at the Central Surgical Center of the Clinics Hospital of the University of São Paulo Medical School (HCFMUSP), the largest public hospital in Latin America. Currently, the hospital has only 3 portable ultrasound devices available for 33 high-complexity operating rooms. This shortage causes frequent delays, limits their use to only a few specialties, and restricts the training of healthcare professionals in ultrasound-guided techniques.

The project will provide three portable ultrasound machines, allowing real-time imaging during surgery and procedures such as central venous catheterization, regional nerve blocks, and hemodynamic assessments. These devices will significantly improve patient safety, reduce complications, and optimize workflow.

The project funds will be used for the purchase of three Philips ultrasound devices, technical training for the medical team, and implementation support. Rotary Club of São Paulo-Aeroporto (District 4420) members will be actively involved in project coordination, supplier liaison, training logistics, reporting, and ensuring alignment with Rotary Foundation requirements.

The local hospital has already confirmed its readiness and internal support, including maintenance and integration of the equipment into its existing infrastructure.

We are currently seeking USD 6,000 in DDF from an international partner to complete the funding structure and bring this impactful, sustainable initiative to life.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
