Project Description

Region: South-East Asia

Country: India

Location: Mumbai

Total Budget: $32,000

Area of Focus: Disease prevention and treatment

VISION: To prevent and control the widespread Disease known as Cancer

AIM -Although India has good advancements for diagnosis and treatment, cancer is still a big challenge to our country.Cancer is the second most common disease in India. As per Indian population census data, the rate of mortality due to cancer in India is alarmingly high. Cancer prevalence in India is estimated to be around 2.5 million, with over 8,00,000 new cases and 5,50,000 deaths occurring each year due to this disease.Lung, esophagus, stomach, oral and pharyngeal cancers mostly affect men, where as in women, cervix and breast cancers are most common. The reason for these high numbers are mainly due to accepted social practices such as chewing of tobacco, early marriage, multiple pregnancies, etc, which are responsible for approximately 70% of cancers in India.Spreading awareness on the dangers of such social practices , initiating steps for the early detection of cancer will be the main focus.Treatment at this stage leads to a cure in a majority of cases. To provide complete assistance to cancer patients beyond that given by the medical profession, that is, taking a holistic approach, not attacking the malignancy in isolation.

BENEFICIARIES:-We plan to take awareness, screening, prevention, treatment and insurance against Cancer as the main project of our club. The whole project will be done in association with Cancer Patient's Aid Association (CPAA) an NGO which is working towards total care management for cancer . http://www.cpaaindia.org/

Our Club plans to have medical screening camps in the most populated slum area of Mumbai like Dharavi , Worli ,and Red light area. We also plan to take this further

to the tribal belt on the outskirts of Mumbai such as Shahpur in Dist. Thane.

We also plan to have awareness drives by means of talks, videos, posters in different schools and colleges as well as in these slum areas.

During these initial screening,if a person is detected with the disease then we shall take care of his/her complete treatment.

The cost of screening of each person is Rs. 350 . We plan to check at least 1000 persons in one year .

The project will be the flagship project of our club and will continue year after year

COST: for next 3 years.....

Initial Screening of 3000 x 350 =10,50,000

Awareness programmes in colleges : 2,00,000

Further treatment and support to the cancer detected patients ...5,50,000

Total Project cost Rs.18,00,000 or USD 30,000
