Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: Pune

Total Budget: $36,189

Area of Focus: Water, sanitation and hygiene

A need assessment for redeveloping wells in tribal hamlets of Ambegaon Block, Pune District reveals that many villages face severe and recurring water shortages, particularly in the dry months. Despite high rainfall during the monsoon, communities are left dependent on tanker water or forced to walk long distances in search of drinking water, as existing wells often become silted, structurally weak, or dry up each summer.

This is a humanitarian project to repair the existing open wells in 7 separate tribal hamlets in Ambegaon Block of Pune District. This involves cleaning, desilting, excavation and deepening (including hard rock blasting) the existing shallow wells to substantially increase the storage volume of all the wells so that water is available year-round. Plus, safety surrounding walls and easy system for using the water.

GG funds will be used to redevelop (as above) the 7 wells to enable water supply year-round for the 2500 tribal beneficiaries in the 7 hamlets. This will include training the beneficiaries so that they can repair, maintain and sustain the well water supply for several years to come.

Note: as of July 1, 2015 there is a 5% additional support fee for cash contributions. This fee does not appear in the financials above because it does not apply if the funds are sent directly to the project account (without going through TRF, and therefore without Paul Harris credit). Clubs sending their cash contribution to TRF must be aware they will have to send an additional 5%.
