Project Description

Region: Asia

Country: India

Location: South India

Total Budget: $450,000

Areas of Focus: Basic education and literacy, Community economic development

Mission:

Empowering 2,000 Tribal Girls in India Through Education

Our Ask: Out of estimated total project cost of $450,000, we have secured soft funding of $233,000 and OUR ASK IS ADDITIONAL $80,000 in DDF to complete the project

Vision

In remote tribal villages of India, girls as young as 14 are often forced into early marriage, denied education, and left vulnerable to poverty and abuse.

These girls are descendants of India's original inhabitants-resilient, resourceful, and full of potential.

Our goal is to empower 2,000 tribal girls through access to quality education and digital learning.

Problem:

Despite government-run residential schools, resources remain minimal: outdated classrooms, limited technology, and no exposure to STEM or digital literacy.

Without intervention, these girls remain locked in a cycle of disadvantage.

Solution:

Through Rotary's Global Grant #3828, we are transforming four institutions-

2 schools and 2 junior colleges (grades 5-12)-into vibrant, tech-enabled learning environments.

Each site will receive:

💻 Digital Learning Centre with 60 Thin Client systems + server

🔬 STEM Lab for hands-on science learning

👩🏽‍🏫 Facilitator / Trainer for students and teachers

🔄 Annual Maintenance & Equipment Replacement

🌐 Online & Offline Teacher Training

📊 Performance Monitoring Reports (3 years)

Why It Matters?

"When you educate one girl, you lift up generations."

Educated girls return to their villages as role models and changemakers-raising community aspirations and reducing early marriages.

Already, graduation rates in one of our pilot villages rose from 46% to 75% after Rotary's digital and STEM interventions.

Together, our team represents the Rotary ideal of Service Above Self - combining technical expertise, ethical commitment, and compassion to turn opportunity into lasting change.

Sustainability

This grant funds a 3-year operational plan, after which the schools-supported by the state government-will maintain and expand the program.

Formal agreements are in place to ensure continuity, accountability, and long-term impact.

Now in our fifth Rotary Global Grant in five years, the Rotary Clubs of Burlingame and Hillsborough have raised over $1.1 million through four completed projects-transforming education and opportunity for more than 2,000 tribal girls in India. With your support, we aim to raise an additional $450,000 to expand this initiative to two more schools, bringing our total impact to $1.5 million.

Through Rotary's Seven Areas of Focus and trusted partnerships with the Andhra Pradesh Tribal Welfare Department, Keats Foundation, The Forgotten International (San Francisco), Dr. Reddy's Laboratories, and Johnson & Johnson, our programs have delivered digital learning centers, STEM labs, internet connectivity, and teacher training. These efforts have helped increase graduation rates from 46% to 75%, with some schools achieving 100% graduation success for girls.

Our impact has been featured in Rotary Magazine (Nov 2025), recognized as winners of Rotary's first-ever Shark Tank event, and celebrated with an invitation to present at the United Nations' 80th Anniversary in San Francisco-a proud milestone showcasing how Rotary's commitment to education, equality, and empowerment continues to build a more peaceful and prosperous world.
