The Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) works with the Indigenous peoples in the Western Highlands of Guatemala, where you find one of the lowest literacy rates in the Western Hemisphere. Each year, potential communities who could benefit from our projects are identified by our GLP Rotary leaders in Guatemala, with help from partner organizations Cooperative for Education and the Guatemalan Ministry of Education.
With innovative self-sustaining components, the Guatemala Literacy Project hits the benchmarks of a well-run, proven, impactful Global Grant. In primary schools, the READING PROGRAM provides a classroom with early readers and includes teacher training in reading pedagogy. The TEXTBOOK PROGRAM reaches middle and high schools helping to build a financially self-sustaining textbook rental program where often no textbooks were available. The TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM provides badly needed digital literacy training that positions youth with the necessary tech skills for future employment or further education. The RISE PROGRAM is a YOUTH DEVELOPMENT and scholarship program that helps promising youth persist in school until they reach the milestone of high-school graduation.
The Guatemala Literacy Project Global Grant #2578323 will be implemented August 2026 and is scheduled for completion in March 2028.
Club members from the Host Sponsor, The Rotary Club of Vista Hermosa, Guatemala City will: participate in the development of a community needs assessment, oversee the implementation of the project components, assist in hosting a Rotary Foundation cadre member during site visits, travel to project schools to help implement projects, ensure sustainability of the activities and outcomes, participate in the Youth Development Program including a career skills workshop, host approximately 30 international Rotary volunteers who will travel to Guatemala to inaugurate and support new programs.
Club members from the International Sponsor, The Rotary Club of Fruita,Colorado will:
work with their district and others to help build a broad base of club and district support, be apprised of the results of the community assessment and participate in decisions and recommendations, serve as the custodian of project funds, including establishing a separate USD bank account, send representatives from its club or district to Guatemala to participate in the project.
Fruita and Vista Hermosa have been active participants in the Guatemala Literacy Project (GLP) prior to hosting this Global Grant. Fruita first became involved in 2022, with multiple members traveling to to visit the GLP in Feb. 2025. In addition, Fruita's primary contact, Joni Ellis, has been involved with the GLP for many years, prior to joining the Fruita Club, and has traveled to Guatemala a total of five times since 2012 with the GLP. Vista Hermosa has been connected to the GLP since 2006, including hosting six past GLP Global or Matching Grants. Joni Ellis in her previous club, Summit County, CO, served as the international sponsor of GLP Global Grant#1412387 - alongside Vista Hermosa as host sponsor - which was recognized as "Exemplary" by The Rotary Foundation.
