1. Introduction
Sports play a vital role in the physical, mental, and social development of children. Beyond recreation, they foster teamwork, discipline, leadership, and resilience. However, in many remote public schools of Nepal, children grow up without access to even the most basic sports materials.
The Sports for Smiles project is designed to bridge this gap by donating essential sports equipment to 11 schools of Mahawai Rural Municipality in Kalikot District. This initiative will directly benefit 2,220 school children, opening doors for play, growth, and happiness.
2. Condition of Sports in Nepalese Remote Public Schools
• Lack of Materials: Most schools in remote regions have no footballs, volleyball nets, badminton rackets, or even simple skipping ropes.
• Limited Resources: Sports budgets are nearly nonexistent.
• Neglected Physical Education: With no structured activities, opportunities remain limited.
• Unequal Opportunities: Girls in particular face fewer chances to participate in sports.
3. About Kalikot District and Mahawai Rural Municipality:
Kalikot District is located in Karnali Province of mid-western Nepal. It is one of the least developed districts, characterized by steep hills, limited road access, and high poverty levels.
Mahawai Rural Municipality, situated in the southern part of Kalikot, is home to scattered villages with difficult geography. Public schools here serve thousands of children, but the absence of sports materials has left students with little to no access to physical activities. Despite these challenges, children are enthusiastic, energetic, and eager to play if given the opportunity.
Why 11 Schools of Mahawai Rural Municipality?
The Rotary Club of Kathmandu has already established a strong and trusted relationship with schools and communities in Mahawai Rural Municipality, Kalikot District.
• In the past, Rotary Club of Kathmandu supported 11 schools in the municipality by providing school bags to students under Project Jhola, which was aimed at reducing absenteeism and motivating children to continue their education.
• A girl-friendly toilet was constructed at Shree Tila Model School, directly benefiting more than 200 girls by ensuring access to safe, hygienic, and inclusive sanitation facilities.
