Project Description

Region: Africa

Country: South Africa

Location: Cape Town

Total Budget: $106,000

Area of Focus: Community economic development

The South African education system is currently facing multiple challenges, including a high dropout rate, outdated infrastructure, and a lack of alignment between the skills taught in schools and the needs of the job market. These challenges are exacerbated by rapid technological advancements and the global shift toward digital economies. The Rotary Club of Waterfront (RCW) has been actively involved in transformative initiatives focused on education, entrepreneurship, and innovation over the past 3 to 5 years. As part of its annual development process for its Action Plan and in response to stakeholder feedback (see Appendix 1-Community Assessment), Project EmpowerED: NextGen Skills for Economic Resilience was created. The goal of this project is to provide future-ready education that equips students-especially those from underserved communities-with the skills and opportunities they need to thrive in both local and global economies.

Vision: We envision a future where every young person is equipped with the skills and opportunities to actively participate in and contribute to a sustainable economy. By aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 4 for Quality Education, this project ensures that students, especially those who are unemployed and from underserved communities, have access to equitable and inclusive education that fosters lifelong learning opportunities. By harnessing the power of digital technologies like AI, data analytics, and cybersecurity, this project will prepare a new generation of leaders who can navigate and shape the rapidly changing global landscape.

The project will focus on:

1. Upskilling and Reskilling: Provide digital and entrepreneurial skills training to unemployed graduates, with a focus on industries most affected by automation and technological advancement in partnership with Salesians Institute for Youth Projects (SIYP), Atlantis Special Economic Zone/Community Stakeholder Network and other local training providers offering accredited and non-accredited courses.

2. Lifelong Learning Ecosystem: Develop a holistic learning platform that connects students, educators, and employers, offering continuous skills development, internships, and job opportunities.

3. Public-Private Partnerships: Forge strong collaborations with local businesses and global technology firms to co-develop educational content, ensuring alignment with market demands and creating pathways for employment.

4. Gender and Youth Inclusion: Ensure that women and youth, often marginalized in technology sectors, have equal access to skills development and job opportunities.

5. Sustainable Economic Growth: Contribute to South Africa's long-term economic stability by building a workforce that is adaptable, resilient, and equipped to meet the demands of a digital economy.

In-demand masterclasses that will be offered include:

- Unlocking Financial Growth for SMEs: Strategies for scaling businesses in the digital marketplace.

- Cybersecurity is Everyone's Responsibility: Best practices for protecting business data and systems.

- The Business of Leading 4.0: Leadership strategies in the era of Industry 4.0.

- Unlocking Growth Potential for SMEs: Tactics for identifying and leveraging growth opportunities.

- Overcoming Growth Challenges: Enhancing sales strategies with the Sales Velocitizer approach.

- Navigating Employment Equity Compliance: Insights and strategies for regulatory adherence.

- Occupational Health and Safety Matters: Ensuring a safe and compliant work environment.

- Time Management: Techniques for optimizing productivity and efficiency.

- Business Etiquette: Building professional relationships through effective communication and decorum.

- Conflict Resolution: Managing and resolving workplace conflicts constructively.

- Negotiation Techniques for Success: Strategies for achieving win-win outcomes

- Social Media and Digital Marketing Excellence: Leveraging digital platforms to drive business growth

- Dynamic Presentation Skills: Delivering engaging and persuasive presentations

- Dress for Success: Reinvented: Revamping professional appearance for career advancement

Implementation Plan:

This project will introduce an AI-powered platform to facilitate skills development, internships, and employment opportunities. In collaboration with key industry partners and content providers, we will develop a curriculum focused on high-demand skills. The platform will offer technical skills and character-building programs to instil resilience, critical thinking, and self- awareness in learners, targeting unemployed graduates, especially women, and small businesses residing in the Waterfront.

We will offer and facilitate access and in-demand skills development training targeting communities in Cape Town (urban), Atlantis (peri-urban) and Kamiesberg (rural). The target population will be unemployed graduates and small businesses residing at the V&A Waterfront. Three cohorts: (i) Cape Town -50; Atlantis -100, Kamiesberg - 50; and five (5) small businesses will participate in this project.

Implementation partners will consist of Salesians Institute Youth Projects (SIYP), Adinga (za.Accelerate), Community Stakeholders Network (CSN) - Atlantis, Rotaract Club of Atlantis, and local training service providers. SIYP will use its current recruitment process to onboard learners. RCW will, in partnership with the V&A Waterfront, onboard the five (5) small businesses based a digital health check.
